President's Report April/May 2012

Hi Members,
Here is an update on what is happening at Impress. The move to our new studio and gallery in Kedron is getting closer and we look forward to sharing the space with members and the community very soon, but there is a lot to organise both logistically and financially. We are dedicated to providing the best printmaking facilities in South East Queensland.  Please read below to catch up with the latest news.

Welcome:
To our new members I extend a very warm welcome to Impress, and hope that you enjoy our vibrant print making community. I’d also like to give a warm to welcome Pat Zuber into the IMC to coordinate the fundraising subcommittee and Jenny Conde who has taken over the role of membership coordinator.

Thank You:
A big thank you goes to Marianne Courtenay from Southern Highland Printmakers who has kindly donated $1000 from the proceeds of another exhibition of the Vario Box at Orange in NSW. A Letter of thanks has been sent.
Another thank you goes to you - our tireless IMC and subcommittee members who are all working hard in preparation and voluntarily to improve Impress Studio and organise the myriad of tasks that have to be done before our move. Thanks go to the heads of the various subcommittees and helpers for your precious time and all of your effort. The next few months may be a testing time for us all as there is so much to organise and put in place including the AGM before we move to Kedron. We will need to call out for more volunteers to work on the clean-up, preparation and move to the new studio. Any new volunteers will be welcomed with open arms.

Update on Kedron:
Works are moving ahead at Kedron and due to the extra funding by the council, it is now estimated that most of the work will be complete by the end of June. The guttering has been replaced and the mezzanine floor is almost finished. The lift has been ordered and will be installed in time for us to take up our lease. We are remaining optimistic that most of the work will be completed by the end of June. The council have also agreed to paint the ceiling and fund the external signage except for the large Impress sign over the front door. It has been a frustrating two years with things moving so slowly, but the project co-ordinator has confirmed the progress and that things are moving quickly now. We will be able to expand our workshop and tuition program considerably and Glenda already has a full schedule for the exhibitions program until the early of 2013.
We had a meeting with Paul Songhurst from the council last week regarding the opening function and we are trying to book a time with the Lord Mayor in early October to officially open the building. This could be a good opportunity for fundraising events, and Glenda has been working on a proposal for the opening events. If anyone has any ideas that they think would be good revenue raisers, please contact Glenda or me with your proposal.

Exhibitions:
The next exhibition on our schedule is in July, the Queensland-Quebec exchange, Portraits D’eau- Water Portraits. It will be shown at the PoP Gallery, 12 Ipswich Road, Woolloongabba and the catalogues and invitations are being designed now. Updates are being posted on Facebook and our Blog

Website:
We had a meeting with Keegan last week to remove the last glitches from the website so that we do a soft launch to iron out any problems and then we will go live. This should really lighten the load of most people on the committee and will free up our time to be put to better use, especially when it comes to memberships, studio bookings and workshop bookings.

Volunteers:
Please spread the word amongst our membership of the need for volunteers. The IMC work tirelessly to provide the best facilities, tuition and equipment to you, we would really appreciate any help the group’s members can give leading up to and at the time of the move. If any members are on New Start, they can volunteer up to 15 hrs a week, so why not use it to support Impress and you could even gain or share some valuable skills.

AGM:
We are almost due for our AGM and at this stage it is looking like being held on June 16th, after lunch at the Kedron Hotel.  John will notify the exact date, time and place. A list of committee roles and responsibilities will be circulated with the announcement of the AGM, and if you are interested in having a more active role within our community, you would be very welcome.

Suggestions:
If you have any ideas that you think could improve Impress as an organisation, the workshops, the gallery fit-out or individual projects, please feel free to email the Secretary or me with your ideas. Any ideas adopted will be recognised accordingly.

Kind regards,
Jenny Sanzaro-Nishimura

President
