Bribie Island workshop for Impress Printmakers

Recently artist Wayne Singleton completed a workshop for Impress Printmakers at Bribie Island in Queensland. The workshop was a complete success. Great participants , all worked hard and had a good time. At an Impress workshop you will learn excellent new skills with enthusiastic professional tutors.  Impress has workshops coming up for the substation location however we also provide off site gems according to need. Participation in workshops is a great way to meet other members and expand your art practice in a supportive and inclusive environment so why not join us today to enjoy the member discounts & working within our new space.

Cleaning Volunteers Wanted

REQUEST FOR HELP WITH CLEANING THE IMPRESS STUDIO
We are trying to set up a roster for cleaning of the Kedron studio, to reduce the burden on the few who so generously volunteer now.We sent out a request just before the AGM for cleaning volunteers. Unfortunately there wasn't  sufficient response to be able to make a roster. The more volunteers, the less frequent the need. We are imagining that members could work in pairs. With two people, it should take approximately an hour, probably less. We are attaching a form to complete. If you already have someone you would like to work with, please talk to them and put your partner name  on the form. If not,  we will  try to match available times to find a a partner. We look forward to hearing from you.

Dear Members

I would like to take the opportunity to introduce the new team and myself in this newsletter as well as update you on the progress of our new premises. We are now entering a new chapter in the life of Impress in our own premises. This of course brings new challenges and issues. We are now in our tenth year and hope to continue on for many more with the support of our membership.

The new Management Committee consists of Ellie Neilsen as Vice president, Stephen Cronin as Secretary, Astrid Moss as Education and Workshop Coordinator, Karen Kaese as Membership Communications Coordinator and Paula Quintela as Studio Coordinator. There are three extra Committee positions, these are held by Jude Roberts, Tim Mosely and Margaret Wilson. We regret that family issues have meant that our Treasurer, Angela Gardner will be spending some time away in the UK and as a result has resigned from the position. Our thoughts are with her at this time. Sue Pickford, who was elected for the position of Exhibition Coordinator, has taken up the position of acting Treasure until we are able to find a replacement. There will be a callout for the positions of Treasurer and /or Exhibition Coordinator.

We began the month with a few glitches that are now hopefully rectified. Our website wasn’t functioning effectively, particularly the membership page for renewals. I am happy to say this page is now functioning and members can renew their membership. The Blog and Facebook page are also other places where members can stay in touch with what is happening.

The Studio is coming along with the near completion of the Screen-printing area and repair of three presses. I would like to thank Paula Quintela, Jenny Sanzaro-Nishimura, John Doyle, Gwenn Tasker and Carolyn Craig for their work in the studio. The Lithographic presses have been repaired and are ready for use. Members can gain knowledge and skills in Lithography in the workshop run by Claudia Husband. The middle size etching press is also on the way to being functional.

With many of the teething problems of moving into a new facility become resolved we can look forward to having many members involved in the studio and workshops creating prints. Impress Printmakers Studio and Gallery is a community based arts organisation run by its members for its members, we are all Impress. I would also like to announce that around October we will be having a members exhibition and you will soon be receiving an expression of interest for Impressions Eight.

Why not pop in to view some of the works in the current Impress Printmakers Studio Gallery exhibition Vie de Pacific.  Dynamic prints contributed by artists from countries bordering on the Pacific Ocean including some examples shown here. However you know that the prints look the best when viewed intimately in the gallery space. You have time, as this is a month long show. These photos dont do them justice so you will have to experience all of the works before the show ends. Month of Print Artists Talks

During the month of March Impress Printmakers will promote printmaking to the broader community through a series of artist talks from professional artists. These talks will give a personal and unique insight into contemporary print making, process and technique. The talks will be followed by an opportunity to speak individually with the artists and tour the studio facilities and gallery. All welcome.

International Open Mini Print Exhibition 2014 - Call for entries

Submission deadline 10 April 2014
The Centre for Contemporary Printmaking

DEADLINE Work must arrive on or before 10th April 2014Paper size 20cm x 20cm

A maximum of three prints can be entered per participant this can be an edition or three different prints.
One will be displayed on the Gallery wall. The remaining prints will be available for viewing in the gallery browsers.
An entry fee of £20.00 per artist is required this will cover installation and return postage of unsold work.
The exhibition will run throughtout May 2014. Please read the submission guidelines.

Report from the President - Jenny Sanzaro-Nishimura

Dear Members,

It has been a long haul, but finally we are at the completion stage of the building works at Kedron. There are a number of minor things that have yet to be completed, but these are in the pipeline. We will meet onsite this week to determine the limit of what we can do in the gallery. The lease has been signed and the building will be handed over pending our agreement to comply with BCC’s maintenance program, insure the building to their valuation and secure a post office box, all of which are standard requirements for their leased properties. The maintenance program is a considerable sum of money and it will mean that we will have to review how we operate our workshop and gallery program and studio use. This could involve slight increases in fees to accommodate vast increases in overheads.

The move to Kalinga should take place in January. Plans for packing up Kalinga and unpacking at Kedron are currently underway. Pat Zuber is currently compiling a list of volunteers for the various tasks and phases of the move and the launch.

Plans for the launch and month of print are under preparation. The Lord Mayor will open the building and launch the studio and gallery on Feb 21^st at 6pm and this will formally begin our formal operations at Kedron. We have compiled a rough program of events, beginning with the launch on 21 Feb that takes us through to the end of March (March will be the month of print). If you are interested in events management or helping out please email Pat Zuber and let her know what your area of expertise/interest is. We have people working on a media package.

It will also be an important time to put our prospectus on display and attract sponsorship from local businesses and corporations. If you have any ideas regarding possible sponsors or benefactors that could be approached, please send us your suggestions. We will need to bring in considerably more money than we have done over the past few years under reduced operations, so I encourage you to bring your suggestions or ideas on raising money or more efficient use of the facilities to the committee. What would you the members like to see included in the workshop and gallery program? We also would encourage you to be sparing with the materials we provide and discourage wastage or misuse.

There is still some work to be completed at the studio before the launch, the Kedron working committee will meet onsite with Melanie Tucker from BCC, the electrician and the lighting supplier on Wednesday afternoon. This meeting will enable us to establish exactly what the restrictions are regarding false walls in the gallery, heritage listing and the installation of the Gallery light tracking.

There will also be visits from two prominent American printmakers next year, one is Charles Cohan, Dean of arts at University of Hawaii, Manoa, who is included in the Vario Box and the Vie De Pacifique; the other is Richard Hricko, Head of the Tyler School of Arts, Temple University, Philadelphia. They are both bringing works to exhibit here and are keen on running workshops whilst they are here for both Impress and Griffith University and both are really well known in the international and American Printmaking scene. They are both really important contacts for Impress as they have a fantastic Printmaking and gallery facilities in both of their institutions and great opportunities for exchanges and exhibitions that we can tap into. I look forward to sharing our new home with you and any national and international visitors that come our way.

Impress welcomes all new members that have joined this year and thank all the ongoing members for their continuing support, without it we would not have this facility. We hope many new friendships are made and creative skills and ideas shared.
